What are effective ways to represent different land uses in satellite images?

This project uses eye-tracking to help determine effective visual features for distinguishing, identifying & estimating various forms of land cover and land use.   Below is an outline of an experiment examining estimations of relative land cover.  I have included data from this 'estimation' task and also from a condition where I deliberately scanned the colored regions of the satellite image.  I did this 'scanning' condition to help illustrate the kind of information that can be collected with the EL eye tracker. Consider these pages a preview as I have a number of additonal tests of satellite images that I have not yet posted. Hopefully, though, this will offer a sense of the extensive information which can be obtained about people's ability to detect visual information from satellite images using eye-tracking technology.
